20 October: 2nd World Statistics Day

20 October: A Special Day for Official Statistics

It is official!

On 20 October 2015, official statisticians around the world will commemorate the second World Statistics Day. The United Nations General Assembly officially approved this special recognition on 3 June 2015, and designated 20 October as World Statistics Day, to be held every five years.

Our inaugural World Statistics Day was held on 20 Oct 2010 (20-10-2010) under the theme of ‘Service, Professionalism, and Integrity: Celebrating the many contributions and achievements of official statistics’. It was a resounding success. Some 140 countries and 50 international entities celebrated the first-ever World Statistics Day. Ceremonies, conferences, and press interviews were organized to highlight the many achievements of official statistics and to reaffirm the core values of official statistics: Integrity, Professionalism, and Service to the Nation.

On this day, the global statistical community, under the leadership of the United Nations Statistical Commission, stepped up to showcase its work and its impact on the world. Their efforts and achievements in quantifying the world have indeed been impressive.

This year, on 20 October, we will observe World Statistics Day under the theme of ‘Better data. Better lives’. As the world prepares to adopt an ambitious global agenda on sustainable development, our role in compiling and disseminating better data has never been more important. Our core values, our professionalism, our long-standing partnership as a united global statistical community will help make the world a better place through better data. Let us join hands to celebrate this special day.
