Meet the Statistician: Luyanda Antony

I come from Port Elizabeth, graduated in BSc from Vista University in the Missionvalley Campus majoring in Statistics and Computer Information Tech in 2000. Graduated in BSc Honours at then University of Port Elizabeth (Summerstrand Campus) majoring in Mathematical Statistics in 2002. Graduated in 2008 in MSc Statistics at the University of Cape Town, by dissertation (Thesis: Calculation of calibration factors for comparative trawls between FRS Africana and RV Nansen, a fisheries project) only part time as I was working full-time, supervised by the late Prof Tim Dunne. His intellect, his willingness to help, his availability for consultations, his insistence that I go and present my work at forums, all of these really helped me and He will be solely missed.

I started working as a Junior Lecturer in Statistics at the Vista University in Port Elizabeth for 4 months. Took a role at the Marine and Coastal Management in 2003 July to 2008 March as a Statistician in a fisheries data environment in Cape Town. I then went to Johannesburg to work for Absa in a Data Mining team as a Senior Statistician focusing on Customer Analytics (Predictive Analytics) for the Insurance and Investment products until 2010 July. I then went back to Cape Town to take a role at Woolworths Financial Services as a Senior Analyst in a Customer Analytics team until 2016 January. I now am with Vodacom in Cape Town as a CRM Campaign Analyst managing all the Loyalty Analytics for Prepaid, Postpaid, and TopUp customers. I’m very much a Predictive Modelling Analyst, currently just finished a segmentation modelling exercise for Prepaid subscribers using/earning Talking Points where I have now made recommendations on CRM campaigns to be run for these customers based on the understanding of the new segments created.
